Questions

Questions candidates actually ask

Short answers. Where a longer one exists, it's linked: the privacy policy, the terms, the specification.

Before you decide

Can this end up in my military record or MEPS file?

Not from us. Your raw file never reaches us. We don't send anything to any military service, MEPS, recruiter or medical record system, and we hand over genetic data only when a court order or search warrant requires it. What you do with your readout is up to you: if you give it to a medical officer, it becomes part of what they keep. We can't tell you how to answer an official form.

Didn't DoD tell service members not to use DNA kits?

Yes. In a memo dated December 20, 2019, the Department of Defense advised service members not to use direct-to-consumer genetic tests, citing risks to personal and genetic information and to the force. We don't sell kits, and your raw file never leaves your device. If you already have a file, the company that tested you already holds your results, and running our check doesn't change that. If you don't, buying a kit creates that record. That decision is yours.

Does GINA protect me?

Not where the military is concerned. The employment protections in the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act don't apply to the U.S. military, which may use genetic information in employment decisions. GINA also doesn't cover life, disability or long-term care insurance. It's one reason the file stays on your device and the readout leaves out disease and mental health.

My data was at 23andMe before the 2025 bankruptcy. Now what?

23andMe filed for Chapter 11 in March 2025. With court approval, TTAM Research Institute, a nonprofit led by co-founder Anne Wojcicki, completed its purchase of the business, including customer data, in July 2025. If you downloaded your raw file, our check reads it on your device and sends nothing. If you want your data gone from 23andMe, delete it in your 23andMe account. Nothing we do changes what they hold.

Will this tell me if I'll pass?

No. Nobody can. It shows where published evidence ties your genotypes to the stressors in your pipeline, so you know where to look while you train.

Are you affiliated with the military, USARIEM or the researchers you cite?

No. Independent. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department of Defense, USSOCOM or any military service. We cite published studies on the specification page. Citing a study doesn't mean its authors or their institutions work with us or endorse us.

Which pipelines does it cover?

BUD/S, SFAS, RASP 1, MARSOC A&S, and PJ / CRO / CCT entry. 160th SOAR Green Platoon is in the pipelines guide but isn't mapped in the readout in rev. 1.0. For PJ, CRO and CCT, the readout follows the enlisted track; officer candidates skip the candidate course and go to Assessment and Selection after a screening.

Why do you need my report or ship month?

Two reasons. The readout maps your genotypes to the weeks of your pipeline, and we sell one only when there's time to use it: at least 6 weeks and no more than 24 months before your date. We never ask for orders, unit, Social Security number, service number or medical records.

I'm 17 and enlisting. Can I use it?

No. You need to be 18 or older, and a parent can't buy one for you. We don't knowingly sell to anyone under 18 or hold their genetic data.

Your file

Which files work?

Raw data files from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA and Living DNA (.txt, .csv, .zip or .gz), and whole-genome VCF files whose ID column carries rsIDs. A 23andMe v5 file is documented to carry 22 of the 24 positions, and an AncestryDNA v2 file 21 to 23. We haven't confirmed the other providers against real files yet. The pre-flight check tells you before you pay.

I don't have a DNA file. What do I do?

Order a 23andMe or AncestryDNA kit, then come back with your raw file in 4–6 weeks. We don't sell kits and aren't paid for sending you there. Testing creates a genetic record held by that company under its own terms, so read the DoD and GINA answers first.

How do I download my raw file?

In your provider's account settings, look for an option to download your raw DNA data. It usually arrives as a .zip, sometimes through a link sent by email. It's easiest on a computer. Download the raw data file, not an ancestry or health report.

How can you read my file without uploading it?

The pre-flight check runs inside your browser tab, in a background process, and looks only for the 24 positions on our list. Turn off your Wi-Fi and run it again: it still works. Or open your browser's developer tools and watch the network panel while it runs. The readout panel shows the bytes sent from your device: 0.

What does NOT ON CHIP mean?

Your provider's chip doesn't test that position. 23andMe v5, for example, doesn't test GDF5 rs143383 or NR3C1 rs41423247. Your readout lists those positions and says nothing about them.

What does NO CALL mean?

The position is in your file, but the chip couldn't read it (it shows as -- or 00), or the letters don't match the position. It counts as missing.

What is the fingerprint?

A SHA-256 hash of your original file, shown as sha256: and the first characters. It lets you and us confirm which file a readout was built from. It can't be turned back into your file, but anyone with an identical copy of your file could compute the same one.

What exactly do you receive?

After you pay, and only when you press Send: your two-letter genotype at each of our positions your file carries (up to 24), your provider's name and your file's fingerprint. About 1 KB. You see the exact message first. Our server rejects anything else.

Why do I choose my file twice?

The page doesn't keep your file or the genotypes it finds, not even in your browser's storage. After you pay, it reads the file again to prepare the message you'll send.

The readout

What's in a readout?

For each position your file carries: your genotype as the file reports it, the weeks of your pipeline where it matters, an evidence grade with its sources, what to train for or discuss with your physician, and what we won't claim from it. The specimen is a complete example.

How strong is the evidence?

Mostly modest, and we say so. Of the 24 positions, none is grade A, 8 are grade B and 16 are grade C. Every reading cites its sources with DOIs. Grades are defined on the specification page.

How long does it take?

Usually under a minute after you press Send. It's built by fixed rules the moment your genotypes arrive.

Who writes it? Does an AI read my genotypes?

No AI model reads your genotypes. The readout is assembled by fixed rules from the published marker table, and nobody edits an individual readout. Warfighter Genetics signs every one: "Signed: Warfighter Genetics · Method rev. 1.0".

Is this medical advice? Is it lab-tested or FDA-cleared?

No to all three. Educational information, not medical advice. Talk to your physician before acting on any result. We aren't a laboratory or a healthcare provider, we don't test samples, and the readout hasn't been reviewed or cleared by the FDA. Consumer DNA files can contain errors; confirm anything that matters to a health decision with a clinical test your physician orders.

Will it tell me to take supplements?

No. It gives no doses and never tells you to start or stop a supplement or medication. Where a reading touches vitamin D or iron, it suggests considering a blood test and discussing it with your physician.

What happens when the method changes?

Every change goes in the changelog. Your readout keeps the revision it was built with, printed on every page. A new readout under a later revision isn't part of this purchase.

Can I share it with my coach or physician?

Yes. It's yours. Print it, or save it as a PDF from your browser's print dialog, and share it with whoever you choose.

Price and refunds

How much is it?

$149, one time. Same price for everyone. No sales, no codes. Nothing recurring.

Why $149 for a file I already own?

The file is the input. You're paying for the method: 24 positions chosen and graded against 43 sources, mapped to the weeks of your pipeline, with what we won't claim printed beside what we do. The specimen shows exactly what that buys before you spend anything.

What if my file is missing too many positions?

The pre-flight check shows your count before you pay, and we won't sell a readout to a file with fewer than 19 of the 24. If the file you choose after paying comes up short and you have no other file, email us and we refund the full $149; you don't send anything. If the genotypes you send still cover fewer than 19, we build nothing, keep none of your genotypes and refund the full $149 without being asked.

Can I get a refund?

Before you send your genotypes, yes: cancel within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Once your readout is built, we refund only for our errors (a readout that doesn't match what you sent, a misread file, or a readout that doesn't follow the method it names) and for billing errors. Email support@warfightergenetics.com from the address on your account. Full rules: terms, section 6.

Why won't you sell me one close to my date?

Within 6 weeks, there isn't time for anything in a readout to change what you do. Sleep, eat, taper, show up. We won't sell you something you can't use.

I'm more than 24 months out. Why wait?

Come back within 24 months of your date. Your genes won't change. The method will improve.

Privacy and deletion

What do you keep, and for how long?

Your account details, payment status and intake answers, and, once you press Send, your genotypes, provider name, file fingerprint and readout. All of it until you delete it. Details: privacy policy, section 4.

How do I delete my readout?

In your account, choose Delete readout. It deletes the readout and the genotypes, provider name and fingerprint behind it, and shows a receipt with the readout ID and the time in UTC. It's permanent. Deleted data leaves our encrypted backups within 7 days. After a deletion you can send your genotypes once more at no charge and we build the readout again; after that, a new readout is a new purchase.

How do I delete my whole account?

Email support@warfightergenetics.com from the address on your account. We delete it within 30 days and confirm by email. We keep only the record of the sale that tax law requires and a record that the deletion happened. Neither holds any genetic data.

Who can see my readout?

You, when you're logged in. We don't open an individual readout unless you ask us to, to fix a fault that affects it, or under a court order or warrant. A sponsor can't see it. Stripe never receives your genotypes.

Do you sell or share my data?

We don't sell personal data. We don't use your genotypes for research, marketing or training any model. Our hosting and database providers carry and store them for us, and nobody else gets them unless a court order or search warrant forces it. The site has no analytics and no advertising trackers.

What if you're sold or shut down?

Your genotypes and readout don't transfer to a buyer unless you agree, and if we close, we delete them after giving you 30 days' notice to save your readout. We will not sell genetic data as a business asset, in a bankruptcy or otherwise.

What we won't tell you

What won't the readout tell me?

Whether you'll be selected, finish or get hurt. Personality, including any "warrior gene" read. Intelligence. Mental health, including PTSD risk. Alzheimer's, APOE or any disease risk. Night vision, navigation aptitude or motion sickness. Supplement doses. A score. Your ancestry.

Why leave those out?

Because the evidence doesn't support them, or because a consumer readout has no business reporting them, and often both. The changelog lists what the earlier version of this site claimed and why each claim went.

Does it say anything about my tendons, joints or bones?

Only what specific positions were linked to in specific studies, such as Achilles tendon problems, stress fractures or bone density, each graded, with what we won't claim beside it. It diagnoses nothing, and no position is read for disc or back injury.
