Naval Special Warfare

BUD/S — Navy SEALs

Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training is widely considered the most physically and mentally demanding military training in the world.

Phases

Pipeline Structure

Phase 1
Physical Conditioning (8 weeks) — Includes Hell Week, a 5.5-day continuous training evolution with minimal sleep. Peak physical and mental stress.
Phase 2
Combat Diving (8 weeks) — Pool competency, underwater knot tying, drown-proofing, and open-circuit diving. Tests composure under water.
Phase 3
Land Warfare (8 weeks) — Weapons training, demolitions, tactics, and field exercises on San Clemente Island.
Post-BUD/S
SQT (26 weeks) — SEAL Qualification Training. Advanced tactics, close quarters combat, and Trident qualification.

U.S. Army Special Forces

SFAS — Green Berets

Special Forces Assessment and Selection identifies soldiers with the physical, mental, and psychological attributes to succeed in the Special Forces Qualification Course.

Pipeline Structure

Phase 1
Assessment (14 days) — Physical fitness tests, land navigation, obstacle courses, and psychological evaluation. Individual performance focus.
Phase 2
Selection (10 days) — Team events, leadership evaluation, and culmination exercises. Tests ability to work under ambiguity.
Post-SFAS
SFQC (53-95 weeks) — Special Forces Qualification Course. Language training, MOS specialty, Robin Sage unconventional warfare exercise.

75th Ranger Regiment

RASP — Army Rangers

Ranger Assessment and Selection Program is the gateway to the 75th Ranger Regiment, the Army's premier direct-action raid force.

Pipeline Structure

RASP 1
Enlisted (8 weeks) — Physical assessment, Cole Range field exercise, Ranger standards, combatives, marksmanship, and small unit tactics.
RASP 2
Officers/NCOs (3 weeks) — Leadership evaluation, planning exercises, and assessment of experienced soldiers seeking Regiment assignment.
Pre-RASP
Airborne + SOCM — Most candidates complete Airborne School and sometimes Ranger School before or after RASP.

Marine Forces Special Operations Command

MARSOC's Assessment & Selection followed by the Individual Training Course produces Marine Raiders, the USMC's special operations force.

Air Force Special Warfare

PJ / CCT / SR / TACP

Air Force Special Warfare produces Pararescuemen, Combat Controllers, Special Reconnaissance, and Tactical Air Control Party operators through one of the longest SOF pipelines.

SW Prep
Special Warfare Prep (8 weeks) — Initial physical and water conditioning at Lackland AFB. First major selection point.
A&S
Assessment & Selection — Evaluates physical capability, water confidence, teamwork, and mental resilience.
Dive
Combat Dive School — Open and closed circuit diving. Shared with Navy and Army special operations.
Airborne
Airborne + Freefall — Static line and Military Freefall (HALO/HAHO) qualification.
Specialty
PJ: Paramedic School — EMT-P certification. CCT: ATC School — FAA air traffic control certification.

160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment

Green Platoon — Night Stalkers

The 160th SOAR "Night Stalkers" are the Army's special operations aviation unit, providing helicopter support to Tier 1 units. Green Platoon is their selection and assessment program.
